Mural painting in history

The art of mural painting has a long history that stretches far back into the past. In the modern era, it experienced a rebirth in Germany, particularly in the 1960s. One remarkable example is the mural created in 1968 by the artists Dieter Glasmacher and Werner Nöfer in St. Pauli, which, at 600 square meters, is one of the largest murals in Europe.

Wall painting also gained importance in interior design, especially in Art Nouveau, although with a few exceptions it fell into oblivion over time.

Wall painting as interior design in architecture

It was not until the 1980s that mural painting experienced a revival in interior design. This was a reaction to the minimalist interior design, which was perceived as cool and contradicted the lifestyle of the 1980s.

However, it took until the 1990s for the colorful design of walls to become established and for wall painting to regain importance in interior design. Newly developed, lightweight paints, especially acrylic paints suitable for damp rooms, played a key role in this.

This allowed the artists an uncomplicated and free use of color and the resulting depictions. Since the 1990s, murals have regained a firm place as a contemporary element of home decor and serve as wall decorations.

3 steps to wall painting as interior design

Joint planning

In order to make the desired image as visible as possible, it is important to have an intensive exchange at the beginning. Questions should be clarified, such as: What space is available? What is the aim of the picture? What could the motif look like? Through this exchange, we can optimally implement the desired message and create a suitable mural.

Design phase

As soon as the requirements and preferences have been clarified, we start designing the sketch. In order to be able to optimally reproduce the effect of the motif, we sometimes place our designs on photos of the object in question. This gives you a realistic impression of how the motif will look on the surface.

Implementation on the object

Once the design has been approved, the exciting phase of implementing the mural on the selected open space begins. We use special raster techniques or projectors to transfer the motif to scale. These tools enable me to implement the design precisely and in detail. This allows me to ensure that the mural appears on the surface in the desired shape and proportions.
