Abstract painting in the history of art

Abstract painting refers to a form of art in which the artist does not attempt to depict the real world on canvas, but instead uses colors, shapes, lines and textures to create an emotional or conceptual effect.

Abstract painting developed in the early in the early 20th century as a reaction to traditional art, which concentrated on the depiction of realistic images. Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian began to experiment with abstract forms and colors, creating a new era of art.

There are no fixed rules or boundaries in abstract painting. As an artist, I can experiment with different techniques to realize my vision on canvas. Sometimes I paint spontaneously and intuitively, sometimes I plan and sketch before I start painting.

Abstract painting can have different forms of expression, from calm and meditative compositions to energetic and explosive works. I can use colors to create moods or emotions, or use shapes and lines to convey a sense of movement or dynamism.

Abstract painting has had an enormous impact on modern art and has inspired numerous artists and styles. Some of the most famous abstract artists are Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline.

Overall, abstract painting offers a way for me as an artist to express my creative visions in a non-representational way and to portray a wide range of emotions and concepts.

For me as an artist, abstract painting is:

  • Freedom and expression: Abstract painting gives me the freedom to express my creative visions in a non-representative way and thus to portray a wider range of emotions and concepts.
  • Experimenting with colors and shapes: Abstract painting offers me as an artist the chance to experiment with colors, shapes and textures without limiting myself to a concrete representation.
  • Independence from reality: With abstract painting, I can detach myself from the real world and concentrate on my inner experiences, thoughts and emotions instead. This gives my paintings a profound and personal expression.
  • Timelessness and universality: Abstract painting has a timeless and universal appeal as it is not limited to a specific time or place. This allows it to be relevant to different people and cultures and to represent a wider range of emotions and concepts.
Care of acrylic paintings2025-05-27T10:32:03+02:00

How should I store an acrylic painting?

Acrylic paintings should be stored in a dry place, protected from light, and at a constant room temperature (ideally 18–22°C). Ensure that the humidity is not too high (approximately 45–55%) to prevent mold growth.

How do I clean a dusty acrylic painting?

Remove dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a clean, soft brush. Gently wipe the surface. Do not use water or detergent, as acrylic paint can be sensitive to moisture.

Can I wipe an acrylic painting with a damp cloth?

Only to a limited extent. If the painting is coated with a protective varnish, a slightly damp cloth can be used carefully (!) – but only in specific areas and without applying pressure. If there is no varnish, avoid using moisture to avoid damaging the paint.

Should an acrylic painting be framed?

A frame is helpful for protecting the painting from impact, dust, and UV radiation—especially for unsealed works. A glass frame is also recommended for acrylic on paper or cardboard (with spacers to prevent contact).

How do I protect an acrylic painting from light and UV rays?

Avoid direct sunlight. Acrylic paints can fade or discolor over time due to UV rays. UV-protective glazing or special museum glass will help preserve the painting for the long term.

Does an acrylic painting need to be varnished?

Not mandatory, but recommended. A varnish protects the surface from dust, UV light, and mechanical influences. It can significantly improve the appearance of glossy or heavily pigmented paintings, especially.

What to do if the surface is damaged?

Scratches, chips, or dull spots should be assessed by a professional (restorer or experienced artist). Attempts to repair them yourself with varnish or adhesives can do more harm than good.

Does insurance for acrylic paintings make sense?

Yes, especially if it has a higher material or sentimental value. Document the work with photos, information about the artist, technique, and year of creation—and keep proof of purchase or authenticity.

Care of oil paintings2025-05-27T10:32:21+02:00

How should I store an oil painting?

Oil paintings should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated room at a constant temperature (ideally 18–21°C) and humidity (approximately 45–55%). Avoid direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations.

How do I clean a dusty oil painting?

Light dust can be gently removed with a soft, dry brush (e.g., goat hair) or a microfiber cloth. Do not apply pressure. Never use water, cleaning agents, or household remedies.

Can I clean a dirty or yellowed painting myself?

No. The cleaning of heavily soiled or yellowed oil paintings should be left to a professional restorer. Incorrect cleaning attempts can permanently damage the artwork.

Should an oil painting be framed?

Yes. A frame protects the painting from mechanical damage and environmental influences. Make sure the painting is not directly against the glass surface when using glazing (e.g., with spacers or museum glass).

How do I protect an oil painting from sunlight and UV radiation?

Do not hang oil paintings in direct sunlight. UV radiation can bleach colors and make the varnish brittle. Indirect, diffused lighting or special UV-filtering glasses or lamps are ideal.

How often should a painting be re-varnished?

A varnish protects the painting and intensifies the colors. Over the decades, it can yellow or become brittle. Renewal should only be performed by a professional conservator—approximately every 50 to 100 years, depending on the condition.

What should I do if there is damage such as cracks or peeling paint?

Contact a qualified restoration workshop immediately. Never attempt to repair such damage yourself—this could cause irreparable damage to the artwork.

Does it make sense to insure an oil painting?

Yes. Art insurance is particularly advisable for valuable or sentimentally significant paintings. Document the work (photos, description, provenance) and keep all records carefully.

Why abstract painting?2025-04-29T14:54:41+02:00

Abstraction offers me a creative versatility that knows no bounds. It is not bound to the representational and allows me to create multispectral impressions - a world that is more complex and open than the visible outside world. Even if my works provide only a few clues to reality, this is precisely their appeal: interpretation remains free and each picture tells a different story for each viewer.

For me, abstract art is neither strictly non-representational nor purely figurative. It moves in a fluid spectrum between these poles, and this is precisely where its strength lies: it invites you to leave reality behind and explore the unknown.

Why I paint abstractly

For me, abstract painting is the possibility of making the invisible visible. My art detaches itself from the classical depiction of reality and opens up a space in which inner worlds and thoughts find expression. While figurative painting is bound to external reality, abstraction offers a freedom that goes far beyond documentation. Here I can create what would otherwise remain hidden: Emotions, moods and ideas that go beyond the visible.

I deliberately avoid an exact reproduction of nature or real objects. Instead, I only suggest structures and forms so that the viewer can activate their own imagination. The aim is not to show something concrete, but to create a space that invites the viewer to think and feel.

Discover the world of abstract art

Insights into my visual world and philosophy
If you are interested in an abstract painting in oil or acrylic, I offer you much more than just a work of art to look at. Together we can immerse ourselves in a discourse about my approach and the motifs of my works. This exchange gives you deeper access to my pictorial world and opens up new perspectives on abstract art.

Art that invites interpretation
My works are not just pictures - they are open spaces for your imagination. Each painting invites you to see, interpret and discover it again and again. The colors, forms and structures speak on an emotional level that does not follow fixed meanings, but invites dialogue.

The special role of abstraction
For me, abstract art is a field of experimentation for new arrangements of color and form. It has acquired a special function that goes beyond the purely visual: it breaks with conventions and encourages the viewer to explore new ways of seeing and feeling.

Why abstract art?

The pursuit of freedom and possibilities
Why do I seek this experimental approach as an artist? Why is it not enough for me to simply go out into nature and depict it as realistically as possible? The answer lies in the freedom that abstraction offers. While nature provides fixed structures, abstract art allows me to overcome them. I can go beyond the visible and create new worlds that reach beyond the known boundaries.

Experimentation as a creative force
Abstraction enables me to make thoughts, emotions and inner worlds visible. Every painting is an experiment - a search for new forms of expression and for ways to make the invisible visible. It is a creative process that inspires and challenges me again and again.

An invitation to discover

My abstract paintings are an expression of this artistic freedom. They invite you to participate in this search, to see the world through my eyes and to find your own stories in the paintings. Let us immerse ourselves together in the fascinating world of abstract art - full of emotion, interpretation and infinite possibilities.

Who paints abstractly?2025-04-29T14:53:27+02:00

Abstract painting is created by artists who consciously detach themselves from the depiction of real objects, people or landscapes in order to express emotions, concepts or visual experiments. Many artists have influenced this style, and there are both historical and contemporary representatives. Here is an overview:

Famous abstract artists:

  1. Wassily Kandinsky: One of the pioneers of abstract art. He saw art as an expression of inner emotions and used colors and shapes symbolically.
  2. Piet Mondrian: Famous for his geometric compositions with clear lines and primary colors. His works strive for harmony and order.
  3. Kazimir Malevich: Co-founder of Suprematism, known for works such as "The Black Square". He reduced art to basic shapes and colors.
  4. Jackson Pollock: main representative of Abstract Expressionism. He developed the "drip painting" style, in which he allowed paint to drip spontaneously onto the canvas.
  5. Mark Rothko: Known for large-format color field paintings that create emotional depth with intense areas of color.
  6. Hilma af Klint: A pioneer of abstract art whose works are often spiritually and symbolically charged.

Contemporary abstract artists:

  1. Gerhard Richter: Combines figurative and abstract painting. His abstract works often show dynamic layers of color.
  2. Julie Mehretu: Her large-format works are complex, dynamic compositions of lines, layers and colors.
  3. Sean Scully: Known for his stripe and block patterns that show an intense preoccupation with color and form.
  4. Anselm Reyle: Works with industrial materials and neon colors to explore abstraction in contemporary form.

Who paints abstractly?

Abstract painting is often chosen by artists who:

  • express emotions and thoughts in a non-narrative way.
  • Experiment with shapes, colors and textures.
  • Questioning traditional ways of presentation and looking for new ways of visual communication.

From great masters to emerging artists worldwide, abstract art remains a vibrant and diverse form of expression.

Abstract painting by Nikolaus Kriese

The works of the artist Nikolaus Kriese are characterized by the combination of naturalistic-modern and traditional views. His motifs often arise from everyday encounters with architecture, spaces, landscapes and objects. He combines color and spatial structures in such a way that each picture unites a decorative color effect with a realistic, interpretative perspective.

Nikolaus Kriese creates a unique pictorial order through the use of multicolored or monochrome surfaces and the interplay between representational and expressive elements. The clear structuring of spaces, objects and landscapes as well as the dynamic relationship between the individual picture planes allow for numerous visual interpretations.

The artist works on canvas and uses oil and acrylic paints. In many of his works, the direct handling of color becomes the defining design element. Each picture follows its own inner logic, with certain elements recurring in different creative periods and developing a serial quality. His paintings are characterized by deserted spaces - even animals are nowhere to be found.

Some of his works appear cool and distant due to their design, even if they contain plants, for example. Thematically, his painting remains diverse and open: everything from marbles in a meadow to clouds, Lego bricks, forests and house entrances can become a motif. Representational elements become central players within a naturalistic composition that unfolds an impressive presence, especially in large-format paintings.

What is an abstract image?2024-12-09T23:24:26+02:00

An abstract painting is a form of art that refrains from depicting recognizable objects, scenes or figures. Instead, it uses colors, shapes, lines and textures to express emotions, ideas or moods. Abstract paintings often detach themselves from reality and offer the viewer room for personal interpretation.

Characteristics of an abstract picture:

  1. Non-representational: There is no direct depiction of real objects or landscapes.
  2. Focus on form and color: lines, geometric or organic shapes and color compositions are in the foreground.
  3. Emotional effect: Abstract art aims to evoke feelings or thoughts without telling a concrete story.
  4. Subjectivity: The interpretation of the image depends heavily on the viewer, as there is no fixed meaning.

Types of abstraction:

  1. Geometric abstraction: clear, mathematical forms, as in Piet Mondrian.
  2. Expressionist abstraction: Emotional, spontaneous gestures and layers of color, like Jackson Pollock.
  3. Minimalist abstraction: reduction to basic elements, often with few colors and shapes.

Abstract art challenges the viewer to break away from traditional ideas and be open to new aesthetic and emotional experiences.

Bringing the immaterial to life

Artists have always been in search of their own style - a fresh expression that breaks away from classical motifs and challenges perception in new ways. With the upheavals of the 20th century, characterized by scientific breakthroughs, modern architecture, psychoanalysis, fashion and politics, a new window to the world opened.

While in earlier eras painting mostly depicted people, landscapes or still lifes in great detail, artists increasingly turned to the invisible: Imaginary worlds, thoughts and emotions took center stage. Abstract art began to dissolve visible reality. What remains are often only vague references to their origins - a play of shapes and colors that leaves room for interpretation and goes beyond the boundaries of the tangible.
