What is modern art? Insights, history & personal perspectives
Modern art inspires, surprises—and sometimes irritates. Yet that is precisely its power: It breaks with tradition, poses questions, and creates space for new perspectives. As a visual artist, I encounter modern art not only theoretically, but daily in my own work. This article provides an overview of the development, characteristics, and significance of modern art—and explores how it finds expression in my works.
Modern art: What does it mean?
The term modern art describes works of art that, from the late 19th century onward, consciously departed from the realistic representation of the academies. Instead of accurately reproducing what was visible, subjective perception, new forms of expression, and experiments with color and form took center stage.
Modern art is diverse: it encompasses painting, sculpture, graphics, and new media. Abstraction, reduction, and emotional depth characterize many works of this era—even to the point of complete detachment from representational forms.

The History of Modern Art: From van Gogh to Kandinsky
The roots of modern art lie in revolutionary movements such as Impressionism and Expressionism . Artists such as Claude Monet , Edvard Munch , and Vincent van Gogh no longer focused on the object, but rather on personal experience. Cubism (Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque) introduced new perspectives on space and form, while Wassily Kandinsky explored the emotional power of color with his abstract compositions.
These movements paved the way for many further developments – from surrealism to conceptual art .
Modern painting today: diversity and new media
Modern art doesn't end in the 20th century—it lives on. In today's painting, many artists embrace traditional techniques and combine them with modern themes, materials, or digital media.
In my own work, I work with classic materials such as oil paint, acrylic, watercolor , and pastel , but also with pigments, varnishes, and experimental supports. The combination of technique, content, and composition creates works that are not merely decorative but also profoundly grounded.
Modern art today means freedom in design – but always with attitude.
Modern art in my studio
As an artist, I consciously work at the interface between tradition and contemporary expression. Many of my paintings are part of curated thematic series that explore social, emotional, or symbolic aspects. The diversity of modern painting flows directly into my work.
Every painting created in my studio in Erfurt is unique—whether it's a free work or a commission. I see modern art not as decoration, but as an opportunity for conversation.
Buying modern art – what should you pay attention to?
Anyone who wants to buy modern art should pay attention to authenticity, technique, and context. A hand-painted original is fundamentally different from mass-produced works or art prints. In my online shop, you will find selected paintings that are both aesthetically and conceptually compelling.
I also offer custom commissions based on your image preferences, motifs, and spatial ideas. Whether portrait, abstract, or symbolic painting: Together we will develop a work that's just right for you.

Conclusion: Modern art is more than a style – it is an attitude
Modern art signifies openness, creativity, and the willingness to explore new paths. It is both an expression of our times and a reflection of individual thoughts. As an artist, my goal is to make precisely this visible – with every new painting created in my studio.
