From Erfurt to the world: Thuringian Nikolaus Kriese delivers art to order

Erfurt, February 18, 2025. In a time of a flood of digital images, Thuringian commissioned painter Nikolaus Kriese creates something special - hand-painted works of art that capture moments and emotions in a unique way.

The roots of his work go far back into the past, specifically to the former GDR. At the age of five, he presented his first art exhibition in his parents' home. In the 10th grade, Nikolaus Kriese finally went to an art boarding school and received his first art scholarship from the Sparkasse. This was followed by three years of training as a theater painter.

From Egypt to L.A.

Today, he approaches every new project with enthusiasm and craftsmanship. "My commissions now come from all over the world," he says. In Los Angeles, for example, he painted a picture for Pipilotti Rist, and in Egypt there is a picture of a Thyssen Krupp frigate for the Egyptian navy. His art is also represented in Saudi Arabia, where the Kaust Institute is using a painting for a high-tech project. A 2 x 3 meter picture of Potsdamer Platz from the 1920s hangs in the office of the CEO of Siemens Mobility in Berlin. "My highlight was a campaign with Jung von Matt and Huawei at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. There I was allowed to design a commissioned painting after Casper David Friedrich for a cell phone advertising clip," Nikolaus Kriese recalls. Since 1995, Kriese has established himself as a versatile artist. His expertise ranges from classic oil and acrylic painting to large-format murals that fill rooms with life. His passion for painting is particularly evident in large formats and the reproduction of well-known paintings.

Video calls and museum visits

Potential customers usually become aware of the father of four via the Internet. The process is always similar. Customers describe their wishes, which are then concretized in telephone and video calls. For historical commissions, Kriese often travels to museums to view the originals. In his studio in Erfurt, he then creates works of art that combine his professional expertise and creative vision. His spectrum ranges from stylish oil paintings for private homes to expressive acrylic paintings for business premises and elaborate wall designs for the hospitality industry.

In close consultation with his clients, he develops works of art that are not only visually convincing, but also emotionally moving. Each of his works tells its own story and creates lasting memories.

In addition to private individuals, he also receives requests from public institutions. In Erfurt, for example, his works can be seen on the façade of the gymnasium in the Geraaue or motifs on the outside roof of the children's cancer ward in the Helios Clinic. "For me, facade painting is my favorite because it combines architecture and painting," he says.
